What it means to be a monk today…

Rein Cis­ter­ci­an Abbey is a vibrant com­mu­ni­ty, a place of pray­er and hos­pi­ta­li­ty. The mon­ks of Rein have shaped the histo­ry of Sty­ria and will con­ti­nue to do so in the future.

Sin­ce 1129, the Cis­ter­ci­ans of Rein have ful­fil­led a wide ran­ge of tasks in the ser­vice of God and man­kind.

ORA et labo­ra, et LEGE

Pray­er and lit­ur­gy have been and con­ti­nue to be a con­stant throug­hout all the cen­tu­ries of its exis­tence. In addi­ti­on, the Cis­ter­ci­an mon­ks initi­al­ly devo­ted them­sel­ves to the deve­lo­p­ment and cul­ti­va­ti­on of the land­scape and sur­roun­dings of the monas­tery. Soon, tasks in sci­ence and cul­tu­re (libra­ry, scrip­to­ri­um) were added.


Later, pas­to­ral care in the paris­hes ent­rus­ted to the monas­tery beca­me ano­ther field of acti­vi­ty. Today, the mon­ks work in many dif­fe­rent are­as.
