The oldest mining in Sty\u00adria<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Not far from Rein Abbey, on the so-cal\u00adled Hoch\u00adfeld, a sen\u00adsa\u00adtio\u00adnal dis\u00adco\u00advery has been made in recent years: Archaeo\u00adlo\u00adgi\u00adcal excava\u00adtions, modern pro\u00ads\u00adpec\u00adting methods and geo\u00adsci\u00aden\u00adti\u00adfic ana\u00adly\u00adses by the Uni\u00adver\u00adsal\u00admu\u00adse\u00adum Joan\u00adne\u00adum (Graz) and the Aus\u00adtri\u00adan Archaeo\u00adlo\u00adgi\u00adcal Insti\u00adtu\u00adte of the Aus\u00adtri\u00adan Aca\u00adde\u00admy of Sci\u00aden\u00adces (Vien\u00adna) brought the oldest mining in Sty\u00adria to light.<\/p>

The traces of this ear\u00adly mining are over 6,000 years old and date back to the late Neo\u00adli\u00adthic peri\u00adod. Flint was mined \u2013 an extre\u00adme\u00adly hard, easi\u00adly cleava\u00adble sili\u00adca\u00adte rock that was of ine\u00adsti\u00adma\u00adble value to the peo\u00adp\u00adle of that time. It was used to manu\u00adfac\u00adtu\u00adre sharp-edged wea\u00adpons and tools \u2013 i.e. essen\u00adti\u00adal ever\u00ady\u00adday objects. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

From Nean\u00adder\u00adthal to the Neo\u00adli\u00adthic Age<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The use of flint in Sty\u00adria dates back a long way: Nean\u00addert\u00adhals were alre\u00ada\u00addy making tools from this mate\u00adri\u00adal over 50,000 years ago. The oldest evi\u00addence of this comes from the Repo\u00adlust Cave near Peg\u00adgau \u2013 the site of the oldest man-made arti\u00adfacts in Sty\u00adria. <\/p>

While in the Paleo\u00adli\u00adthic Age flints were still coll\u00adec\u00adted super\u00adfi\u00adci\u00adal\u00adly, the peo\u00adp\u00adle of the Neo\u00adli\u00adthic Age began to dig spe\u00adci\u00adfi\u00adcal\u00adly for this \u201cstra\u00adte\u00adgic raw mate\u00adri\u00adal\u201d. In the gent\u00adly rising ter\u00adrain bet\u00adween the pre\u00adsent-day vil\u00adla\u00adges of Rein and H\u00f6r\u00adgas \u2013 the so-cal\u00adled Hoch\u00adfeld \u2013 pro\u00adba\u00adb\u00adly seve\u00adral hundred mining pits (Pin\u00adgen) were crea\u00adted. <\/p>

The pla\u00adty flint found here was an important raw mate\u00adri\u00adal for hewn stone tools in the sou\u00adthe\u00adas\u00adtern Alpi\u00adne regi\u00adon and has been found in num\u00ade\u00adrous Neo\u00adli\u00adthic sett\u00adle\u00adments in Sty\u00adria and Car\u00adin\u00adthia.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Tech\u00adni\u00adques of ear\u00adly mining<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Using tools made of ant\u00adlers, bones or wood, the miners of the time crea\u00adted pits up to five meters deep in the yel\u00adlow-gray loamy soil of the Hoch\u00adfeld. The\u00adre they came across seve\u00adral lay\u00aders of whitish pla\u00adty flint \u2013 aver\u00adaging one to two cen\u00adti\u00adme\u00adters thick. <\/p>

During an archaeo\u00adlo\u00adgi\u00adcal inves\u00adti\u00adga\u00adti\u00adon in 2016, a com\u00adple\u00adte\u00adly pre\u00adser\u00adved mining pit from the Neo\u00adli\u00adthic peri\u00adod was unco\u00adver\u00aded for the first time. The appro\u00adxi\u00adm\u00adate\u00adly 3.5 meter deep shaft with a dia\u00adme\u00adter of around two meters show\u00aded a late\u00adral bul\u00adge at its base, via which the flint was spe\u00adci\u00adfi\u00adcal\u00adly extra\u00adc\u00adted. <\/p>

Lar\u00adge quan\u00adti\u00adties of was\u00adte mate\u00adri\u00adal were found in the refil\u00adled pit \u2013 flint slabs, flakes and core stones that did not meet the high demands of the flint knap\u00adpers and were the\u00adr\u00ade\u00adfo\u00adre dis\u00adpo\u00adsed of on site.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

1500 years of mining tra\u00addi\u00adti\u00adon\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Radio\u00adcar\u00adbon dating of char\u00adco\u00adal from seve\u00adral mining pits shows that flint mining in Rein was car\u00adri\u00aded out bet\u00adween 4500 and 3000 BC \u2013 a tra\u00addi\u00adti\u00adon that span\u00adned around 1500 years. This peri\u00adod coin\u00adci\u00addes almost enti\u00adre\u00adly with the enti\u00adre Neo\u00adli\u00adthic sett\u00adle\u00adment histo\u00adry of Sty\u00adria. <\/p>

With the dis\u00adco\u00advery of the Rein mining pits, it was pos\u00adsi\u00adble to pro\u00adve that this is the second known Neo\u00adli\u00adthic sil\u00adex mine in Aus\u00adtria. A com\u00adpa\u00adra\u00adble site is only loca\u00adted in Vien\u00adna-Lie\u00adsing (Antons\u00adh\u00f6\u00adhe), whe\u00adre radio\u00adla\u00adri\u00adte, a varie\u00adty of flint, was extra\u00adc\u00adted at the same time. <\/p>

Sin\u00adce the Vien\u00adnese site was alre\u00ada\u00addy inves\u00adti\u00adga\u00adted in 1929\/30, the fin\u00addings in Rein are now con\u00adside\u00adred the only com\u00adple\u00adte\u00adly and modern\u00adly docu\u00admen\u00adted Neo\u00adli\u00adthic mining pit for flint in Aus\u00adtria.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Archaeo\u00adlo\u00adgi\u00adcal heri\u00adta\u00adge of natio\u00adnal importance\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Due to its excep\u00adtio\u00adnal importance, the suspec\u00adted mining area was pla\u00adced under monu\u00adment pro\u00adtec\u00adtion by the Fede\u00adral Monu\u00adments Office in 2019. In addi\u00adti\u00adon, the site was included in the top 100 list of the most important archaeo\u00adlo\u00adgi\u00adcal monu\u00adments in Aus\u00adtria. <\/p>

As ear\u00adly as 2018, the Archaeo\u00adlo\u00adgi\u00adcal Muse\u00adum of the Uni\u00adver\u00adsal\u00admu\u00adse\u00adum Joan\u00adne\u00adum dedi\u00adca\u00adted a spe\u00adcial exhi\u00adbi\u00adti\u00adon to the flint mining of Rein. <\/p>

In the new Stone.Age.Museum Stift Rein, the Rein flint can now be shown at its place of ori\u00adgin. The finds from Rein offer a fasci\u00adna\u00adting insight into the life and tech\u00adno\u00adlo\u00adgy of the ear\u00adly miners of Sty\u00adria. They show how inno\u00adva\u00adti\u00adve and orga\u00adni\u00adzed the peo\u00adp\u00adle of the Neo\u00adli\u00adthic Age alre\u00ada\u00addy were \u2013 and how an incon\u00adspi\u00adcuous stone like flint beca\u00adme the basis for tools, pro\u00adgress and sur\u00advi\u00adval. <\/p>
