After Admont Abbey in Upper Sty\u00adria, Rein has the second lar\u00adgest abbey libra\u00adry in the regi\u00adon, with appro\u00adxi\u00adm\u00adate\u00adly 110,000 objects. The hol\u00addings of the abbey libra\u00adry com\u00adpri\u00adse appro\u00adxi\u00adm\u00adate\u00adly 110,000 objects, inclu\u00adding books, jour\u00adnals, indi\u00advi\u00addu\u00adal sheets, musi\u00adcal scores, and even Kep\u00adler\u2019s table from 1607. The valuable coll\u00adec\u00adtion includes 390 manu\u00adscripts and 150 incuna\u00adbu\u00adla (ear\u00adly prints up to 1500). The main are\u00adas of focus are theo\u00adlo\u00adgy and his\u00adto\u00adri\u00adcal disci\u00adpli\u00adnes.

Monas\u00adtery libra\u00adri\u00ades have always been unders\u00adtood as an \u201carmory\u201d for mind and soul. In Chris\u00adti\u00adan usa\u00adge, \u201cArma\u00adri\u00adum,\u201d ori\u00adgi\u00adnal\u00adly mea\u00adning armory, was the term used for the are\u00adas of a monas\u00adtery whe\u00adre books were kept befo\u00adre the\u00adre were sepa\u00adra\u00adte libra\u00adri\u00ades for them. It can the\u00adr\u00ade\u00adfo\u00adre be assu\u00admed that the Fran\u00adco\u00adni\u00adan foun\u00adding mon\u00adks from Ebrach had alre\u00ada\u00addy brought their books with them and kept them in the Arma\u00adri\u00adum, a small room that can still be iden\u00adti\u00adfied today on the so-cal\u00adled Abbots\u2019 Gal\u00adlery. From 1586 onwards, ano\u00adther room (\u201cBiblio\u00adthe\u00adca supe\u00adri\u00ador\u201d) is men\u00adtio\u00adned. During a reno\u00adva\u00adti\u00adon in 1612, this Biblio\u00adthe\u00adca supe\u00adri\u00ador with its ten work\u00adsta\u00adtions (\u201ccathe\u00addrae\u201d) was loca\u00adted abo\u00adve the ori\u00adgi\u00adnal sacris\u00adty (today: St. Mary\u2019s Cha\u00adpel). In addi\u00adti\u00adon to owning books, the pro\u00adduc\u00adtion of books in a \u201cScrip\u00adto\u00adri\u00adum\u201d was also important in and for Rein. Espe\u00adci\u00adal\u00adly at the end of the 12th cen\u00adtu\u00adry, wri\u00adting was done not only for one\u2019s own needs, but also for exter\u00adnal cli\u00adents (e.g. Salz\u00adburg Cathe\u00addral Chap\u00adter). In the histo\u00adry of the Rein Abbey Libra\u00adry, the\u00adre have been many pain\u00adful chan\u00adges to the book coll\u00adec\u00adtion: For exam\u00adp\u00adle, the huma\u00adnist poly\u00admath Wolf\u00adgang Lazi\u00adus \u201cbor\u00adro\u00adwed\u201d the famous so-cal\u00adled Rein Pat\u00adtern Book for his his\u00adto\u00adri\u00adcal rese\u00adarch. The codex from the ear\u00adly 13th cen\u00adtu\u00adry is one of the oldest known pat\u00adtern books, which ser\u00adved as tem\u00adpla\u00adtes for artis\u00adtic initi\u00adals or gra\u00adphics in the monastic scrip\u00adto\u00adria. After Lazi\u00adus\u2019 death in 1565, it came to the impe\u00adri\u00adal court libra\u00adry in Vien\u00adna along with other manu\u00adscripts. <\/p>

During the abbey\u00ad\u2019s cri\u00adsis in con\u00adnec\u00adtion with the Refor\u00adma\u00adti\u00adon, the libra\u00adry was negle\u00adc\u00adted: In the 16th cen\u00adtu\u00adry, an inven\u00adto\u00adry lis\u00adted only 587 book titles in addi\u00adti\u00adon to 30 parch\u00adment volu\u00admes.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

From the 19th cen\u00adtu\u00adry onwards, an inten\u00adsi\u00adve sci\u00aden\u00adti\u00adfic inte\u00adrest of the con\u00adven\u00adtu\u00adals can be obser\u00adved, becau\u00adse many works from almost all sub\u00adject are\u00adas were purcha\u00adsed under the abbots Lud\u00adwig Cro\u00adphi\u00adus (+ 1861) and Vin\u00adzenz Kn\u00f6dl (+1890) and the coll\u00adec\u00adtion was sys\u00adte\u00adma\u00adti\u00adcal\u00adly expan\u00added by the libra\u00adri\u00adans.
From the 20th cen\u00adtu\u00adry onwards, a finan\u00adci\u00adal\u00adly endo\u00adwed expan\u00adsi\u00adon was and is no lon\u00adger pos\u00adsi\u00adble. New acqui\u00adsi\u00adti\u00adons come from dona\u00adti\u00adons, estates and lega\u00adci\u00ades. Pre\u00adcur\u00adsors of this alre\u00ada\u00addy exis\u00adted in the 19th cen\u00adtu\u00adry, when the book coll\u00adec\u00adtion of the diplo\u00admat Frei\u00adherr Josef von Wer\u00adner was bequea\u00adthed to the libra\u00adry in 1878 or the book pro\u00adper\u00adty of the canon lawy\u00ader Rudolf von Sche\u00adrer (+1918). Curr\u00adent\u00adly, art-his\u00adto\u00adri\u00adcal works by the art his\u00adto\u00adri\u00adans Anne\u00addo\u00adre Dede\u00adkind and Horst Schwei\u00adgert have been included in the abbey libra\u00adry as lega\u00adci\u00ades; their cata\u00adlo\u00adging is in pro\u00adgress and will take some time. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Not only books have their fates, but also the place whe\u00adre they are stored. During the Second World War, a folk\u00adlo\u00adre insti\u00adtu\u00adte had to be tem\u00adpo\u00adr\u00ada\u00adri\u00adly accom\u00admo\u00adda\u00adted in the abbey. The dama\u00adge to the buil\u00adding fabric of the monas\u00adtery cau\u00adsed by the Rein flood in 1975 made a com\u00adpre\u00adhen\u00adsi\u00adve res\u00adto\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon and sta\u00adbi\u00adliza\u00adti\u00adon of the sta\u00adtics neces\u00adsa\u00adry. The show room was res\u00adto\u00adred bet\u00adween 1979 and 1984, and fur\u00adther steps were taken in 2019\/2020: the res\u00adto\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon of the cei\u00adling and wall fres\u00adcoes in the show room and the win\u00addows in the show room and depot area, the instal\u00adla\u00adti\u00adon of a lift for dis\u00adab\u00adled access, and the instal\u00adla\u00adti\u00adon of new shel\u00adves to accom\u00admo\u00adda\u00adte the art-his\u00adto\u00adri\u00adcal hol\u00addings and the Fer\u00addi\u00adnan\u00addea. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

In Rein, the\u00adse are 150 incuna\u00adbu\u00adla and 390 manu\u00adscripts; they are descri\u00adbed by Dr. Wal\u00adter Stein\u00admetz in the manu\u00adscript cata\u00adlog, which can be view\u00aded elec\u00adtro\u00adni\u00adcal\u00adly via the spe\u00adcial coll\u00adec\u00adtion of the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty Libra\u00adry of Graz. <\/p>

The inte\u00adrest of experts and muse\u00adums world\u00adwi\u00adde is still pre\u00adsent, as inqui\u00adries and visits show.<\/p>
