A Glimpse behind Monastery Walls

It is an impressive experience to glimpse behind the walls of the oldest Cistercian abbey in the world. Since 1129 the Cistercian monks have been living and praying and working according to the rules of Saint Benedict in the monastery of Rein.

The monastery 15 km from Graz is called the “Cradle of Styria”. Here the tomb of the founder and first lord of Styria Leopold I. reminds the visitors of the origins of the country. The library contains precious medieval manuscripts and documents. But the abbey is not a museum, it is still an active monastery and offers visitors the chance to catch a glimpse of monastic life of today.
The exhibitions may only be visited as part of a guided tour. Guided tours in German are provided daily at 10.30 am and 13:30 pm.

Groups booked in advance are welcomed daily throughout the year for guided tours in English between 9 am and 5 pm. The monks are glad to welcome worshippers to the choral service at 12 noon or to Holy Mass on Sundays and church holidays.
Time recommended for a visit: 2 hours.

Rein Monastery also offers monastic retreats for men.
